Scotland, along with England, Northern Ireland and Wales, is a part of the United Kingdom. A country forms a northern part of Great Britain. Scotland has the only one land boarder – with England. From the island of Ireland it is separated by the English Channel.
The territory is divided into the following regions: the Highlands (north), the Central Lowlands and the Southern Uplands. The area of the Highlands is full of rocky hills and picturesque valleys. From southwest to northeast the territory of the Central Lowlands is stretched. The largest cities of the country are concentrated here. The Grampian Mountains, the highest in the British Isles, are situated in the Southern Uplands. The highest peak is Ben Nevis.
The weather in Scotland is colder than in other parts of the United Kingdom. Western regions of the country are warmer but wetter. As for the eastern part of Scotland, there the climate is preferably dry and cool. In the uplands snow can be stable thought the winter months. But the real symbol of Scottish weather is fog which occurs at any season.
